At
Community Day Charter Public School, our mission is to work together as
a community to develop and implement a curriculum and learning environment that discovers
and supports the special characteristics and unique learning styles of each student. We
believe that learning takes place in the context of a family and that families must be
supported in ways that maximize academic success for their children. |
| Lawrence has always been a gateway immigrant city. It is a small city,
barely seven square miles, but home to some 70,000 people representing, over its history,
fifty-four distinct ethnic groups. As such, Lawrence is a microcosm of the nation,
particularly the nation of the future that will be characterized by profound diversity.. |

Founded
as a center for textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th
century, the city's huge mills still dominate the landscape. Immigrants provided the labor
force, and the immigrant experience has provided a unifying continuity for newcomers.
Today, the population is largely Latino with high percentages of residents coming
from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Community Day Charter Public School's 306 students
reflect the overall demographics of the city. 80 % are Latino, 13% are Anglo and 5 % are
African American. The majority are low-income. |

The school offers a safe, supportive,
structured learning environment in which our students thrive. An extended year with a
month long summer program, a longer day with before and after-school programs and small
classes with extensive support of English language acquisition are yielding outstanding
academic results.
|
The school develops Personal Education Goals (PEG's) for each
student. When a student requires modifications due to minority language status or special
needs, teachers and parents approve a plan of action. All students participate in the
regular curriculum with support provided through tutoring, pull-out instruction and work
with learning specialists. The curriculum is based on and closely aligned with the
Massachusetts State Frameworks. We take great pride in our strong standards based
curriculum and our standardized test scores reflect this commitment.

Parents are very involved in the life of the school and in their
children's education, having input on such issues as academics, field trips and
fundraising. Community Day Charter Public School
promotes a sense of community in which high
academic standards are stressed as well as an emphasis on respect and strong moral
character. The students and teachers work together to determine the dress code and the
code of conduct, constantly reviewing and reassessing them at town meetings. A

education is in great demand and our parents express a high level of
satisfaction. Last year the waiting list for the lottery was 900 applicants! Our students benefit from the individualized attention and the school's
high expectations. Our families in turn benefit and the city of Lawrence benefits in an
enhanced reputation and additional educational opportunities. We encourage our students to
take pride in their city, its rich heritage and strong working class ethic. Ultimately the
benefit to Lawrence will be even greater as our students go on to complete higher degrees
in education and become the future leaders of the city.
