Highlights 2010 Season
Playoffs
Super Bowl XIII
Texans 25 Lions 19
Lawrence - Much of the Lions and Texas's
seasons came down to two totally different elements. The
Texans were long passes thrown up for grabs to their two
leapers, Eric Lantigua and Adolfo Bello. The Lions was bad
luck. Both of these elements came into play in the game
winning score of Super Bowl XIII.
The Texans began the game very fast.
Scoring on just three plays, finishing with a long TD pass to
Lantigua from Texan QB Elvis De La Cruz. On the next
possession, Adolfo Bello intercepted a Danny Figueroa pass and
returned it for a touchdown pushing the lead to 13 - 0.
The Lions scored on their next possession to make it 14-6 on a
Figueroa to Marcus Jimenez TD pass.
On the next possession, Bello scored again along
the sideline getting one foot in from De La Cruz to push the
lead to 19-6 at the half.
The Lions didn't lose hope. On their first
possession of the first half, the Lions mixed in Joe Fabian runs
and short passes. Marching down the field with ease, the
Lions finished off the drive with a 4 yard TD run from Luis
Esmurria. Esmurria wasn't done. Later in the half
off a Texans punt, Esmurria returned it for a 45 yard TD run to
tie the score with just 2 minutes remaining.
With time running down, the Texans pulled to the
Lion ten. On the final play of the game, the Lions
bad luck came back. The Texans threw up one of their
lofted passes for Lantigua and Bello, it began to fall into the
hands of Texans receiver Alex Ortiz, but was tipped away by a
Lions, only to fall into the hands of Lanttigua for the game
winning score.
Xavier Gomez of the Texans and Chris Cheuvert of
the Lions had stellar games defensively for each of their
teams recording 7 tackles each. The makes back-to-back
Super Bowl wins for the Texans who will look for a three-peat
next season under De La Cruz, Ortiz, and Gomez.
Saints 28 Lions 33
Lawrence - In the final two minutes two
minutes of the game, 20 points were scored and when the final
whistle blew it was the 2-7 Lions, upsetting the previously
undefeated Saints in another classic game that will be
remembered for some time.
The first half was
dominated by the Saints much like they've done all season.
Roberto Rodriguez mixed the run with some precision passing to
find Ivan Geronimo and Milton Vargas for scores.
Rodriguez, also picked off a Danny Figueroa pass and returned it
for a touchdown, giving the Saints a 22-6 lead at the half.
Marcus Jimenez then took
over at quarterback and things changed. Jimenez mixed in
runs with finding Luis Esmurria over the middle for score after
score.
Saints down under two
minutes, trailing 26-22, looked to be defeated. The team
had just lost the lead on another Esmurria touchdown catch.
After two incompletions, Rodriguez dropped back into a tough
wind and heaved a long pass to a wide open Ivan Geromino, who
took it to the end zone for a 40 yard TD pass and a 28-26 lead
with only 1:15 left.
The Lions then took the
kickoff deep into Saint territory and slowly picked their way
towards the goal line with the clock running down. Xavier
Gomez of the Saints had tackle after tackle throughout the game,
keeping the Lions in check. With 27 seconds left the
lions took their final timeout on four down and goal to draw up
their final play. A play action roll out for
Figueroa, reaching for the end zone and a go-ahead touchdown for
the Lions.
The Lions take on the
Texans, who secured their place by defeating the Titans 38-34 in
another great playoff game. Super bowl XIII is on Nov
5th at 1:30 at the Marston Street Field weather permitting.
Texans
38 Titans 34
Lawrence - In a game that saw 8 lead
changes, 4 different playing scoring multiple touchdowns, and
great play after great play, it was only fitting that the game
was decided on the final play of the game.
The game was full of long passing plays and quick
scores. The Texans were led by Eric Lantigua and Adolfo
Bello's 2 touchdown receptions each. Elvis De La Cruz,
threw for 4 TD's and Alex Ortiz catching 1 as well.
The Titans were led by Brandon Lucero.
Lucero ran for 2 touchdowns and threw for 3 others, 2 of them
caught by Natatlie Arenas.
The game came down to the final play with only 1
second left at the 3 yard line. After a timeout the Titans
looked for a quick out to the corner, but the pass was knocked
away by Lantigua to seal the win.
The Texans will play the winner of the Saints v.
Lions game in Super bowl XII on Nov. 5 at 1:30 PM.
October 7
Lions 8 Titans 14
Game 1 Field 1
Lawrence - What is the first thing that
comes to mind when you hear a team is 0-5? It probably
comes between, really bad, dysfunctional, untalented, moody, or
all of the above. What might surprise you is that you'd be
totally wrong in the case of this year's Lions team.
The Lions are anything but bad, dysfunctional,
untalented, and moody. The Lions boast a very
talented and active defense. The Lions have the second
best pass rush in the league led by trio of Waleska Velez, Ariel
Portorreal, and Chris Cheuvert. Who after a sack
celebrate with their own dance.
The offense is led by the rotating QB trio of Marcus Jimenez,
Luis Esmurria, and Danny Figueroa. Each have their
own style that has led to many exciting plays and drives so far
this season.
What really tells the full story of their season so far is a
combination of timing and bad luck. Twice this
season they have run out of time going for the tying or game
winning score. In the bad luck department, a tipped
ball falling into the wrong hands has led to at least one loss.
Most often 0-5 tells the story by itself. This year's
Lions are the exception to that rule and they will try to end
their string of bad luck next Monday.

Texans
20 Titans 20
Game 1 Field 1

Adaramola continues to dominate on the line for the Titans
recording 3 more sacks giving her 7 on the season.
The Saints remained unbeaten as Patrick Sullvan,
Roberto Rodriguez, and the rest of the offense put on show
against the Lions. Marcus Jimenez played well in the loss.
In game two, the Saints and Titans couldn't get
much going on offense as both defenses starred. Adaramola
recorded her seventh and eighth sacks on the season in the tie.
Elexus Rios Gonzalez played very well on the line for the
Saints.
Bello and Lantigua again put points on the board
for the Texans. Luis Esmurria played well in the loss.
September 22 - Opening Day
Lions 8 Titans
12
In the opener, the Titans led by a smothering
defense outlasted the Lions 12 - 8. Luis Esmurria scored
the first touchdown on the season with a strong run up the
sideline avoiding many would-be Titan tackles. After Danny
Figurero found Jens Reyes for 2 points, the Lions took an
8-0 lead. From the midway point on the first half
until the end, Na'Blaghe Adarmola took over the game on defense.
She sacked the Lions QB tandam of Marcus Jimenez and Figuero 6
times and hurried them on every possession for the rest of the
game. The Titans scored on a Jaxell Negron run late
in the first half and pulled to within 2. Early in the
second half, Brandon Lucero found rookie Anthony Reyes in the
flat and flew up the sideline 40 yards for the go-ahead score.
Texans
12 Saints 13
In game two the Saints came from behind against
the reigning champs the Texans 13-12.. The Texans
used their short passing game early to gain the lead.
Elvis De La Cruz hit Adolfo Bello on a short screen and he took
it in 30 yards for the touchdown.
The Saints stuck back with a 10 yard run from
rookie Danny Halloran, who played well on both sides of the
ball. The Texans then looked to gone up again on a
spectacular diving catch by rookie Alex Oritz, but the ball just
touched the ground. On the same drive Eric Lantigua ran it
in for a 12-6 lead.
Midway through the second half the Saints marched
down the field thanks to Patirick Sullivan's hands.
Sullivan's one handed grab over the middle for a first down and
yet another one handed grab for a touchdown tied the game.
The Saints took over the lead on a 1 point conversion run by
Quarterback Roberto Rodriguez to seal the win.
